America Divided

"United we stand, Divided we fall" is a phrase that has been used in mottos, from nations and states to songs. The basic concept is that unless the people are united, it is easy to destroy them. This is a counter to the maxim divide and rule.
The phrase has been attributed to Aesop, both directly in his fable The Four Oxen and the Lion<1> and indirectly from The Bundle of Sticks<2>.

The first attributed use in modern times is to John Dickinson in his revolutionary war song The Liberty Song. In the song, first published in the Boston Gazette in July 1768, he wrote: “Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all! By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall!” Patrick Henry used the phrase in his last public speech, given in March 1799, in which he denounced The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions. Clasping his hands and swaying unsteadily, Henry declaimed, “Let us trust God, and our better judgment to set us right hereafter. United we stand, divided we fall. Let us not split into factions which must destroy that union upon which our existence hangs.” At the end of his oration, Henry fell into the arms of bystanders and was carried almost lifeless into a nearby tavern. Patrick Henry hit the nail on the head and his words still ring true. We are a nation divided and as long as we remain so, we threaten the union that is the core of it's existence.

How could we forget his words so easily? How could we let division creep into the fabric of our country? It exists in every segment of our society and is tearing apart a foundation based on equality. Our own Declaration of Independence states, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

One thing we need to do is get rid of labels that divide rather than unite. If we keep thinking of ourselves as Native American, African American, Chinese American, Disabled American, Mexican American, French American, (insert your group here) American we will stay divided in those groups. We are AMERICANS.

Let's get back to the reason The United States even exists - equality for all. Instead of being proud of our separate groups, let's be proud Americans and unite in the ideals that founded our country.

Many of us are asking how colors affect lives of people…Well, there’s only a single answer for that. It’s because colors have become part of our daily life. What’s the color of your shirt now? Try to look at the things around you and you’ll notice everything has a color…It’s true that life is colorful. it is also true that life is difficult..
Among colors, green is my favorite color..What’s yours? I don’t know why… ever since I was born in this world, I am really fond of the color green. Maybe, it represents nature, life and safeness. I remembered when I and my mom were shopping in an exclusive wholesale clothes store in town. Here in San Diego, swapping stuffs are usual tradition most especially when Christmas is nearly approaching… So, my mom and I start choosing clothes..The one that I choose was green while my mom chooses pink…
One woman with his child were also shopping… suddenly, when the woman asked her child what she wants, the child pointed the color green blouse on my hand…At that time, the wholesale clothing store has no stock or that kind of dress…so the little girl was crying because she wants to buy the one that I’m holding… it’s my favorite color…but since it’s Christmas, used to give it to the little girl and choose another one…
If I would be asked what does a color green symbolizes, I will answer peace…and it there’s a peace there’s love of course…No wonder why, forest is the peaceful place I’ve ever visit…

Words of goodbye

Let me tell you a story. This one is based on my own experience. It all started when I was 16 years old. While playing outside the park here in San Diego, I met a boy. He was just an average kind of boy, yet there’s something unique about him.
He was so quiet. Every time I tell a story, he just stares at me and say nothing. Until one day, I told him about the guy who broke my heart. He just comforted me and told me that "to get hurt is part of being loved".
Our high school graduation came and we were excited the go to college. Everything was ready. My mom has just visited a wholesale clothing store downtown to buy my graduation dress; my dad was coming home for the celebration; the graduation party was all set.
On the day of the graduation, he didn’t show up. I called their house but no one answered. The ceremony was almost over when I got the news. He got into an accident and died right away. My whole world crumbled; I forgot the graduation party; I even forgot college. He was the only person keeping me sane these years, and now I lost him.
After the funeral, his mother gave me his diary. It was already scraped and worn, some pages were even loose. Page after page, tears flowed from my eyes. Everything finally became clear to me. But it’s too late already. I can never get back the past. It was what he wrote at the end that broke my heart.
“Today I will tell her I love her.” It hurts knowing that I’ll never be able to tell him back how much I love him.
